What can I do to prevent lymphedema and what treatment is available for lymphedema?

The lymphatic system is responsible for transporting fluid and proteins from body tissues. Small vessels carry lymphatic fluid to regional lymph nodes, then the fluid is drained back into the bloodstream. Lymphedema, or swelling, occurs when the fluid is not drained back into the bloodstream. When excess fluid and protein accumulate in the tissues the result is swelling or "lymphedema."

Anyone who has had surgery for breast cancer (or any type of cancer) that included a lymph node dissection is at risk for lymphedema. If left untreated, lymphedema can become disabling. Most women who have had breast cancer do not develop lymphedema, and reports on the incidence of lymphedema in people with breast cancer vary from 6% to 29%.

Lymphedema usually occurs in the arms or legs below the location of lymph node removal and can develop soon after surgery, or years later.
